Lab rules

As you know, there is not a lot of space in the lab and a lot of people working there. As the consequence, there are several points, which we all should respect:
- The list of chemical is available through the google sheets (link). You can find the chemical according to name or CAS number.
- The list of chemicals is useful only if it is actual. Therefore:
- If you receive any chemical, put it into reasonable location in the lab and add the chemical into the sheet.
- If you finish any chemical, delete it from the sheet.
- If you take any chemical, return it to the same location.
- Otherwise, we can repeat this tedious work again.
- If you break anything in the lab (except common glassware), do tell Zdenek or Iva, and fix it as soon as possible. Do not expect that we will believe it happened itself.
- Do not close the argon cylinder during the day.
- If you are the last who is leaving the lab, turn off the ultrasound bath and close the argon cylinder. If there is a white label ‘nevypinat’ on the cylinder main valve, do not close it – you could harm someone’s experiment. Check if the windows are closed.
- Clean glassware after your experiments as soon as possible. Wash it carefully – no one likes dirty glassware and does not want to use it. Wash it with water, then with acetone or ethanol – otherwise, it takes much longer before it is dry.
- Do not store dirty glassware in the sink. Do remind it also to the others. Otherwise, it might happen that you will have to clean all dirty glassware because we do not have any technician.
- From time to time, put clean glassware to the cabinets/shelves. We do not have any technician who would do it instead of you.
- Use the booking calendar for the instrument. Try to be there on time – maybe, someone else would like to use it too. For booking, use your full name, not only initials. Please, always delete you reservation when you are not going to use the instrument. (Even in the case of deleting just a few minutes before your session starts). If you are more than 15 min late, you will loose the whole hour and someone else may use it.
- Do not store standard solvents together with the dry solvents (with molecular sieves) and vice versa.
- If you finish any dry solvent, prepare new batch – do not put the finished bottle back and expect that it is O.K. and some else will do it. The same is true for any other solvent where you leave only a few millilitres.
- If the bottle is finished, bring new one from the storage cabinet in 215.
- If any solvent is almost finished including ethanol or acetone for washing, order a new one or let know someone who will order it.
- Check the pressure in cylinders from time to time, especially the argon cylinders. It takes a while to get new one.
- Be responsible for others. If you do not feel well, stay at home. If you need to go to the university anyway, use a facemask.
- If you are not sure how to use an instrument/perform a reaction/build an apparatus – ask someone who is more experienced.
- Do not leave your reaction unattended and unlabelled. That means, if you leave your reaction running, you should always write a note WHO does the experiment, WHAT is the reaction conditions, and the TIME of the experiment ends.
- Make yourself confident with the internal ordering system at UCT - you may ask Štěpán for help. If you finish any kind of consumable, bring or order a new piece.
